Quickstart
FROM ZERO TO YOUR FIRST GENERATION IN FIVE STEPS
On this page
1. Create your account
Go to backplate.ai/device/signup, enter your email and a password (8+ characters), and create the account. We'll send a verification link to your inbox — click it. You're now in, with five free generation tokens on your balance.
You can manage your account, see your token balance, and view your activity at any time at backplate.ai/account.
2. Install the plugin
Backplate ships as two native plugins, one per host:
- DaVinci Resolve (OFX) — installs into the system OpenFX plugin folder. Works on the Color page or the Edit page.
- Adobe Premiere Pro (UXP) — installs as a panel under Window → Extensions → Backplate.
Full download links and per-OS install steps are on the download page. Quit the host application before running the installer, then re-launch it — both Resolve and Premiere only scan for plugins at startup.
3. Sign in from the plugin
Both plugins use a device-code flow — you never type your password into Resolve or Premiere.
- Click Sign In in the Backplate panel.
- Your browser opens to a verification URL with an 8-character code displayed.
- Confirm the code matches the one shown in the plugin, then click Approve.
- Click Sign In in the plugin a second time. Your account email and balance now appear in the panel.
The token is stored securely (macOS Keychain for OFX; Adobe UXP secure storage for Premiere). It auto-expires after 90 days — Backplate will prompt you to sign in again when needed.
4. Drop the plugin and wire your matte
Backplate composites a generated background under your existing matte. It does not key for you. Use whatever masking tool you already trust.
In DaVinci Resolve
- On the Color page, add Backplate from the OpenFX library to your clip's node tree.
- For Power Window, Magic Mask, or any matte you've already drawn, the matte is read automatically from the source clip's alpha channel — no extra wiring needed.
- For external mattes, route them through a Layer Mixer or Alpha Output before the Backplate node.
In Adobe Premiere Pro
- Open Window → Extensions → Backplate to bring up the panel.
- Set up your foreground key on the clip first using Ultra Key, Track Matte Key, or a nested sequence with alpha.
- With the clip selected and the playhead on the frame you want to generate against, click Grab Frame in the Backplate panel.
5. Type a prompt and generate
In the Backplate panel, write a plain-language prompt for the new background:
- "Sun-lit warehouse interior, soft natural light, late afternoon."
- "Open ocean horizon, cloudy sky, slightly overcast."
- "Dimly lit modern office, blurred desks in the background, golden hour through windows."
Click Generate. The current frame is sent to our server, processed by the AI model, and returned as a new background composited under your matte. Typical generation time is 8–15 seconds.
One token is consumed per successful generation. Failed generations are automatically refunded — you only pay for results.
Re-prompt as many times as you want. Each generation is its own token; the plugin caches results locally per project so re-renders and hand-offs cost nothing.
